Programme Notes
Any piece of music that one writes is an expression of something, be it a definable feeling or entity, or an abstract emotion one cannot put into words. There is much wisdom behind the old saying that "after silence, music comes closest to expressing the inexpressible".
I cannot remember much about how the main idea of the piece came about. It may have sprung from my hands whilst improvising, or slowly morphed itself into being. In any case, it came to life fully when the Greek pianist Mikaela Livadiotis asked me to write a piece for her performance in the 2018 John Halford competition.
I chose the title to be in both Greek and English in order to represent the international genesis of this piece, to illustrate how the latter is connected to the former (the pronunciation of both is strikingly similar), and to give further emphasis on the fact that language is also an expression - the ultimate expression besides music.
